Manijeh Ghafourian

My passion for midwifery started in 1989 when I was in Iran. In 1994, I graduated with a B.Sc. Midwifery. After graduation, I worked as a midwife in various settings (hospital, clinic, home). I had the privilege of delivering hundreds of babies and attended even more births under the supervision of other midwives.

In 1993, I married my husband and had two beautiful children both born with the help of midwives. While I was pregnant with my first child, I continued my midwifery practice. I vividly remember the day my son was playing in my office while I palpated the belly of a 28 week mother on the couch.

In 2005, our family decided to immigrate to Canada. I wanted to continue practicing midwifery in Canada, however at the time a midwifery licensing program for internationally educated midwives did not exist. As a result, I pursued a new career in Biomedical Engineering.

As I was completing the Biomedical Engineering Program at BCIT, I was accepted to UBC Multi-Jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Program (MMBP). MMBP is a midwifery intensive course designed to mainstream international midwives into BC. I was part of the first set of graduates of MMBP.

I have been working as a Registered Midwife since completing the program.
